For a proper look at Napes Needle you’ll need to take a detour scrambling uphill over loose scree, more often than not there will be climbers about if you’re struggling to find it. Completing this walk will also take you to the top of Pillar at 892m (2928ft). You’ll also pass one of the most photographed natural attractions in the Lake District and a popular wild camping spot. os.Branding.init(); This is a great circular walk which takes a little over 6 hours covering about 10 miles.We started from the farmers car park at Seathwaite taking in the waterfall of sour milk gill then into Gillercombe valley up onto Green Gable down windy gap and a scramble up to Great Gable coming back via Moses Trod and down to Honister then back to Seathwaite. The Glaramara House hotel in nearby Seatoller is in a stunning location. Back on the Climbers Path a fairly steady descent continues on with some great views to be had. From the summit of Green Gable you drop down to a trail intersection named Windy Gap, no doubt called such due to the insanely strong winds that can funnel up from the valley floor. Calculate the time using Naismith’s Rule and factor in your own pace. This is technically an ascent from Beck Head – the col between Kirkfell and Great Gable – from the track known as Moses’ Trod. As it contours around Great Gable it allows you to create a circular walk from almost all the various ascent routes. People do climb these routes on their bikes as well so be careful when you’re driving... Bagging the first Wainwright on the walk to Great Gable, Grey Knotts. This path traverses the upper south side of Great Gable, and forms part of Wainwright’s Gable Girdle route, albeit in reverse on this occasion.
